Speaker: Prof. Chen FENG
Biography: Chen Feng received the B.Eng. degree from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, in 2006, and the M.A.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees University of Toronto, Canada, in 2009 and 2014, respectively. From 2014 to 2015, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow with Boston University, USA, and Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland. He joined the School of Engineering, The University of British Columbia, Okanagan Campus, Canada, in July 2015, where he is currently an Assistant Professor and co-cluster lead of Blockchain@UBC. His research interests are in coding theory and its applications in various fields, ranging from wireless communications to quantum communications, and from communication networks to blockchain systems.
Abstract: What do Apple’s iPhones, Microsoft’s cloud storage and MagiQ’s Q-box have in common? They all use error-correcting codes to enable reliable, efficient and secure communication between devices. In the first part of his talk, Dr. Chen Feng will review his research work on error-correcting codes with applications to peer-to-peer networks and quantum security. In the second part, Dr. Feng will explain how his research on error-correcting codes can be applied to design better blockchains in terms of speed, scalability, and security.
